How Much Does House Cleaning Cost?
How cleaning prices are worked out in Mississauga and the Greater Toronto Area: labour hours, team size, and what changes the total.
By Maria Team Cleaning Company · · 8 min read
The short answer
House cleaning costs the number of labour hours the job needs, multiplied by the hourly rate for that type of cleaning, plus HST. Labour hours are the combined working time of everyone on the team, so 3 cleaners working 3 hours in your home is 9 labour hours.
How many labour hours a home needs depends on its size, its condition and the scope you choose. That is why an honest price starts as a range and is confirmed before booking. For current rates and a range for your home, use our price calculator; for a confirmed plan, request an estimate.
At a glance
- Billing unit
- Labour hours: the combined active work time of the team inside your home, not travel time.
- Formula
- Cleaners × hours on site = labour hours. Labour hours × the hourly rate for the service = labour cost, before HST.
- Team size
- Usually 2 to 5 professionals, depending on the job, the layout and the schedule.
- Minimum visit
- 4 labour hours.
- Estimates
- A range, not a guaranteed final price. Scope and labour hours are confirmed before booking.

- The labour hours actually worked on the approved scope. Extra time is only added with your approval.
How labour-hour billing works
We measure a cleaning visit in labour hours: the time each cleaner spends actively working inside your home, added together. That is a different number from the time the team spends at your home, because the work is done by a team.
A team splits the rooms between people, so the job is finished in fewer hours on site. The size of the team changes how long we are in your home, not how much work the job takes.
cleaners × hours on site = labour hours
labour hours × hourly rate = labour cost (plus HST)
Worked example: 3 cleaners × 3 hours = 9 labour hours
A home that needs 9 labour hours of cleaning can be finished by three cleaners in about three hours on site, or by two cleaners in about four and a half. Either way the job is 9 labour hours, so the labour cost is the same; the larger team simply finishes sooner.
| Team | Hours on site | Labour hours |
|---|---|---|
| 3 cleaners | 3 | 9 |
| 2 cleaners | about 4.5 | 9 |
It is a realistic size of job: in our price calculator, a Standard after-renovation clean of a home under 1,200 sq ft is planned at a minimum of 9 labour hours, with a suggested team of three cleaners for about three hours on site.
The same arithmetic answers a common question. Three cleaners, each on the hourly rate, look three times as expensive per clock hour as one cleaner, but they also complete three hours of work in that clock hour. Compare total labour hours, not the size of the team.
What changes the number of labour hours
Two homes with the same number of bedrooms can need very different amounts of labour. These are the factors that move the total most.
| What changes | Why it changes the labour |
|---|---|
| Property size and layout | More rooms, hallways, stairs and square footage mean more surfaces to clean. A finished basement is a separate area with its own labour. |
| Condition | Buildup changes the time more than room count does. Cleaning inside an oven may take 30–40 minutes if it is lightly used, but 90–120 minutes with heavy grease or burnt-on buildup. |
| Scope and service | A maintenance visit to a home already in good shape needs fewer hours than a deep, move-out or after-renovation clean of the same home. A Premium level adds detail work, and labour with it. |
| Bathrooms | A bathroom usually takes more labour than a bedroom: fixtures, glass, tile and grout all need detail work. |
| Kitchen | Usually the largest single room for labour: counters, backsplash, sink, cabinet fronts and appliance exteriors. |
| Inside appliances | Inside the oven, fridge or dishwasher is extra work added by request. A fridge has to be emptied first. |
| Inside cabinets and drawers | Depends on how many there are, their condition, and whether they are empty. |
| Windows and blinds | Interior glass, tracks and blinds are detail work that grows with the number of windows. Outside panes are not part of the standard scope. |
| Renovation dust | Fine construction dust resettles, so it needs a dry-to-wet sequence and often more than one pass. |
| Clutter and access | Surfaces covered with belongings take longer or cannot be cleaned, and heavy clutter can mean re-scoping the visit. |
Renovation dust is the factor people most often underestimate. Our page on post-construction cleaning in Mississauga explains why fine dust needs more than one pass.
Estimate vs actual labour
An estimate is a range, not a guaranteed final price, because the real condition of a home is only certain once the team is inside.
- Before booking: you get a range of labour hours based on your home’s size, condition and scope, and we confirm the rooms, priorities and add-ons with you.
- On the day: the team works to the approved scope, and you are billed for the labour hours actually worked, subject to the 4 labour-hour visit minimum.
- If the home needs more time: when the condition or scope turns out to be materially different from what was described, the team pauses and confirms an adjusted plan with you before continuing. Hours are not added without your approval.
- If it needs less: because billing follows the labour actually worked, a visit that takes fewer hours costs less, down to the visit minimum.
The full policy wording on labour hours, minimums, estimates and changes on the day is in our Terms & Conditions.
Add-ons: extra tasks, extra labour
Add-ons are tasks outside a service’s base scope, for example inside the oven or fridge, inside cabinets, interior windows and tracks, blinds, or heavy grease. Each one adds labour hours to the visit, which is why the price calculator lists add-ons separately and shows the labour each one adds.
Add-ons are easiest to plan when they are confirmed before the visit, so the team arrives with the right time and people. During a visit, an extra task is added only if time allows and after you approve it.
Why a fixed online price can be misleading
A flat price for “a three-bedroom clean” has to assume a condition and a scope before anyone has seen the home. If your home needs more labour than that assumption, something has to give: less time on the details, or a price that changes once the home is seen. If it needs less, you pay for labour that was never needed.
An hourly rate on its own is only half the answer, too. A lower rate can cost more in total if the job takes more labour hours, so the fair comparison is labour hours × rate for the same written scope.
That is why we quote a range tied to labour hours, confirm the scope before booking, and bill the labour actually worked.

Cleaning costs by service in Mississauga
The labour model is the same for every service. What changes is how much work each service includes:
- Regular cleaning: maintenance for a home that is already in good shape. Visit frequency and the home’s condition set the labour hours per visit.
- Deep cleaning: a one-time reset of buildup and detail zones that regular upkeep does not reach, so it takes more labour than a maintenance visit to the same home.
- Move-in cleaning: an empty home cleaned before your belongings arrive, including inside surfaces where agreed.
- Move-out cleaning: a handover-ready finish for your landlord, buyer or the next occupant.
- Post-construction and after-renovation cleaning: fine construction dust removed in multiple passes; the dust level and the type of renovation drive the labour.
All five are described on our Mississauga cleaning services page. For a sense of scale on a larger job, our after-renovation case study describes a four-person team working about a day and a half to remove construction dust in multiple passes and reset a home’s furniture from the client’s photos. Projects of that size are estimated individually.

Questions about cleaning costs
How much does a house cleaner cost per hour?
We charge per labour hour, and the rate depends on the type of cleaning; current rates are shown in our price calculator. The rate applies to each cleaner, so a team of three working one hour on site is three labour hours. To compare quotes, multiply the labour hours by the rate for the same scope instead of comparing hourly rates alone.
Does a bigger team cost more?
Not for the same scope. Nine labour hours cost the same whether three cleaners work three hours or two cleaners work four and a half; the larger team just finishes sooner.
Is there a minimum visit length?
Yes. Every visit is booked for at least 4 labour hours, and our Terms & Conditions set a minimum service fee.
Does travel time count as labour hours?
No. Labour hours count only the active work time inside your home, not travel time.
Is HST included in the price?
Labour is priced before tax and HST is added on top. The price calculator shows the total including HST.
What happens if the cleaning takes longer than the estimate?
If the home needs more time than the approved estimate, for example because of heavier buildup than described, the team pauses and confirms the updated plan with you before continuing. Hours are not added without your approval.
Where these facts come from: the definition of labour hours, the visit minimum and the estimate rules are in our Terms & Conditions; team sizes, time on site and the oven example come from our price calculator.
